Incision aimed inwards at an oblique angle

If the scalpel is held obliquely, the lower dermis and subcutis are frequently missed and go unrecorded. It is therefore impossible to assess deep-lying changes (e.g. tumours in the lower dermis and subcutis, panniculitides).
