Biopsy techniques
The sharp spoon
Results while healing are very much better
in the case of superficial biopsies in which the preserved
Stratum reticulare shows the structure of the scar, and serves
as a matrix for immigrating cells. Up till now, the sharp
spoon has usually been deployed for superficial removal. This
may be held either like a pen and moved around with the fingers
(“Pen technique”) or pressed against the inner
surface of the hand by four fingers, whereupon movement is
produced by the metacarpal-phalangeal joints.
(«
Potato-peeler
technique«).(5) The “potato-peeler
technique” has the advantage that one can exert more
pressure in this way, so that it is easier to abrade joined
pieces of tissue that will lend themselves better to histopathological
assessment.
