The biopsy occupies a central place in medical
diagnosis. Despite the development of illustrative diagnostics
and modern serological evidence procedures, histopathological
tissue assessment continues to form the ”Gold Standard“.
Given its simplicity of handling, as well as the presentation
of a skin test that is neatly defined in terms of its length
and diameter, the punch biopsy is currently indispensable
as the standard method of taking skin biopsies. The punch
biopsy gives a representative cross-section through the entire
cutis, as it reaches sufficiently deep and includes a sufficiently
wide excision of the cutis. As a rule, a 4mm punch will suffice.
